Lenin on the need for a Bolshevik political mass newspaper

, , , , , , ,

In his book What Is to Be Done?, Lenin discussed the role of a nationwide newspaper not only as a collective propagandist but also a collective organizer, especially in the Russia of 1902 when there was no real and consolidated party as yet, and no solid links with the masses and sustained leadership of a broad mass movement. This article seeks to share an overview of Pravda (Truth) as a Bolshevik mass newspaper that eventually played that role and contributed to the victory of the 1917 October Socialist Revolution.

“The recent ruling of the Philippine Supreme Court, which upheld with finality the constitutionality of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), [is] a stark reminder that the Philippines remains a staunch bulwark of US imperialist hegemony in the Asia-Pacific region, and that reactionary pro-US forces remain in control of the main levers of the Philippine state.”

Use all media outlets for anti-imperialist propaganda, activists urged

,

UTRECHT, The Netherlands—“Revolutionary forces should have a very positive attitude about the Internet as a powerful vehicle for mobilizing the masses,” Jose Ma. Sison said in a talk before fellow activists at a symposium on anti-imperialist organizing and propaganda held here on February 17.

Sison, chairperson of the International League of People’s Struggle (ILPS) and founding chairman of the Communist Party of the Philippines, compared today’s Internet with the railways a century ago. “The capitalists built and operated the railways to earn huge profits and to open up new frontiers for their businesses, that’s a given,” he noted.

But capitalists could not prevent determined revolutionaries, like Lenin’s Bolsheviks, from using the same railways “to transport the underground newspaper Iskra so it could reach thousands of workers.” Today’s revolutionaries should also maximize the Internet in the same way to mobilize the masses, Sison said. “There are always ways to go around restrictions,” he added.
