Imperialist powers use fascist armed forces to suppress people's resistance at home and in other countries. (AI-generated image)

In March 2022, we published this PRISM primer entitled “Fascism as a tool of imperialism”. It was part of an international campaign against the rising global tide of fascism—which has continued to sweep and inundate many countries since then. The continuing Zionist occupation of Palestine and its monstrous genocide in Gaza, among its other US-imperialist-backed programs, the increasing turmoil in the Middle East, the continuing US-NATO proxy war in Ukraine, and other flashpoints with immediate global impact, lead us to republish the primer today.

Workers strike and protest in major French cities in January and February 2023

Many European countries have seen a surging wave of strikes and protests since 2022. Leading the labor charge are the workers’ unions in the United Kingdom, France, and Spain. Other European countries, including Germany, Italy, Hungary and Portugal, also launched strikes in the beginning of 2023.

The Europe-wide strike wave is being generated by intense economic crisis (fuelled by galloping inflation especially in energy and food prices) and social unrest. The millions of strikers and protesters feel underpaid, overworked, neglected, and clobbered with anti-strike sanctions and police action while negotiations have ground to a halt.

So far, there is wide public support for the labor strikes and union demands, even in the case of key public services such as health, schools and transport. Teachers’ strikes have been supported by students.

Jose Maria Sison

Note by Julieta de Lima:

It is with deepest grief that I have to be the one to issue my husband’s last and final message to the revolutionary forces and the people on the 54th anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines. He started discussing with me the outline and writing of the message a month ago when he just got discharged from the hospital at his second confinement in November and just before the start of his third and last confinement on November 28. He wrote the first draft on paper, which I keyed in to the computer and then he reread and corrected it twice to produce this final draft below. Some fifteen or so minutes before Joma took his last breath, he we was still talking about ensuring the revolution would win victory and advancing to socialism. With his last thoughts he remained optimistic about the Filipino people whom he served with utmost determination.

In this talk, ILPS Chair Emeritus Jose Maria Sison presented an overview of the historical rise of fascism: its fundamental basis in the existence of the state of an exploitative ruling class which emerged as old primitive-communal societies dissolved into class societies; its modern roots as a recurring form of state violence under the rule of the monopoly big bourgeoisie; and the recent conditions of inter-imperialist rivalries, the Covid-19 pandemic, and growing people’s resistance, that favor the intensification of fascism throughout the world.
